Whale mission
It’s estimated that 1.4 million whales were killed during the 20th century. Now, at the beginning of the 21st, the future seems bleak for these mammals of the sea. They’re faced with scheming whaling companies, poachers, a frail International Whaling Commission and polluted feeding grounds.
But there is hope. With sound science and breathtaking images, The Last Survivors of the Sea documents the awe-inspiring quest of a crew of scientists and filmmakers as they record the last few marine giants. The ocean-going sailing ship Sedna IV and her science team are following the ancient route of early whalers on an historic mission around the remote Cape Farewell whaling grounds in the treacherous North Atlantic Ocean. This vast watery wilderness conceals many mysteries and maybe some new whales. Could this remote area be the key to the future of right whales?
